The Winnebago Peace & Justice Center is again selling Peace Wreaths this holiday season as part of its general fundraising activities. As one of only 2 places in the country that sell this type of wreath, the WPJC is excited to be offering an even better wreath than last year. This years peace sign shaped wreaths are locally made with 100% Fraser fir and measure 30-32” in diameter. At a cost of only $38, Peace Wreaths are available for purchase online (with full shipping capabilities) at www.wpjc.snizville.com, by calling Drew Mueske at 920.292.0386, or by stopping in during open hours. Once wreath orders are placed, production of wreaths takes up to 2 weeks. The WPJC will be accepting orders through Monday December 4th and will have some extra wreaths on hand that are available for purchase.

The WPJC has been accepting orders since mid September. All orders that have been placed can be picked up on Tuesdays throughout November and December between 5-7pm, this Friday November 24th from 3-6pm and during regular meeting times. The next general meeting of the Winnebago Peace & Justice Center will be Sunday December 3rd. All members of the community are invited to attend. The Winnebago Peace & Justice Center is located in downtown Oshkosh, below Limelite Studio at 321 Market Street.

The Peace Wreath idea began in 2005 with little knowledge of what it would take. The WPJC decided they’d like to have a large Wreath for the side of the building, so they worked with a local crafts-woman and WPJC supporter and eventually it turned into a fundraiser for us. “After making the wreaths ourselves last year, we have much respect for the wreath-making process and we’re very happy to have partnered with Fraser Farm,” said Jenni Ryan, Co-chair of the Winnebago Peace & Justice Center. Fraser Farm, LLC is a beautiful Fraser-only Christmas Tree farm located just Northwest of Ripon on 37th Ave, off Townline Rd. Internation days of Action against Poverty

A three day committment of fasting and prayer to stir the conscience of the
American Public will convene in Oshkosh September 14-16 to coincide with the
United Nation review of their committment in 2000 to lessen world poverty.

Prayer and Drum Vigils will begin at the Sundial (Opera House Square) at 7pm
each evening and will conclude a day of fasting with a public march to a
nearby church. The community members led by Pax Christi Fox Valley will
proceed to St. Peters Church on Wednesday, September 14; to First
Congretionalist Church on Thursday, September 15 and the First Presbyterian
Church on Friday, Spetember 16.

All people of faiths, paths, and ages are invited to gather to bear public
witness.

Local Organization Kicks Off Petition Drive Calling For Troop Withdrawal from Iraq on Wednesday, August 31 at Opera House Square at 6pm in Oshkosh.

The Winnebago Peace and Justice Center (WPJC), based in Oshkosh, is coordinating a petition drive calling for a referendum for the April ballot for the City of Oshkosh that will read:

“Should the United States begin an immediate withdrawal of its troops from Iraq, beginning with the National Guard and Reserves?"

The WPJC will have a kick off rally at the Opera House Square, Wednesday, August 31 at 6:00pm. Please meet at the Sundial to listen to Jason Moon, an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran and Paul Esslinger, Oshkosh elected official who supports the public use of referendums. More speakers will be announced at the event.

The WPJC believes that a public referendum is a viable and private way for members of the Oshkosh community to vote their conscience on such an issue. “I believe that our community should have the option to voice support or opposition to a war that has changed objectives several times and has no timetable for an end date”, stated Mary Meyst, WPJC Member.

Recent polls show that more than 50% of Americans want to see some or all troops withdrawn from Iraq immediately. WPJC believes that the best way to support our troops is to bring them home safely. A referendum question will allow citizens to deliver that message to the politicians.

This will be a grassroots effort that will be empowered through a combined path of community outreach at local events and a door-to-door campaign.

We have received great local discussion, and have recieved good media coverage, including a radio interview, a Northwestern Op Ed, a Northwestern Blurb, and today a letter to the editor. There also seems to be some interest for certain members of the city council to pursue this.

We are having another meeting at the Oshkosh Public Library on August 3 at 7pm. It is downstairs in room A. Most of you have committed yourselves to peace & non-violence, and the anti-war movement. It is important that people as knowledgable and involved as you all are to come to this meeting, show your support, and help shape the form of this project.

WPJC and LWGP to host Iraq War Referendum Organizational Meeting

On Wednesday, July 20th from 7 - 8:30 p.m. in Meeting room A of the Oshkosh Public Library, the Winnebago Peace and Justice Center (WPJC) and the Lake Winnebago Green Party (LWGP) will sponsor an organizational meeting for all citizens interested in doing the work necessary to provide voters in the April, 2006 elections an opportunity to vote on an Iraq War referendum question.

"Public opinion polls now show that the majority of Americans have real doubts about the Iraq War and a growing number want to see an immediate withdrawal of US troops," said Bob Poeschl of the WPJC. "It's time to allow citizens of Winnebago County the opportunity to make their voices heard at the ballot box."

Ron Hardy, co-chair of the Lake Winnebago Green Party, said that the Iraq War has demanded an unprecedented and disturbing sacrifice from the National Guard and Reserves and their families. As a result, the WPJC/LWGP referendum question says the following: "Should the United States begin an immediate withdrawal of its troops from Iraq, beginning with the National Guard and Reserves?"

The purpose of the July 20th meeting is to determine the level of grassroots support for a referendum drive, and to discuss strategies for getting the question on the April 6th ballot.

Poeschl and Hardy said that almost 40 towns in Vermont have endorsed withdrawal resolutions. "Bring the Troops Home" resolutions have also been passed in Amherst, Mass. and Arcata, Calif. And last November in San Francisco voters endorsed Proposition N, an anti-war statement declaring, "The federal government should take immediate steps to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq and bring our troops safely home now."

"We believe that Wisconsin should be in the forefront of what is now a national movement to support our troops by demanding that they be brought home," said Hardy.

All citizens are encouraged to attend the meeting.

and he isn't really iterested in having a benefit that
excludes people under 21, he suggested finding another
outdoor? venue and then moving it back to the date of
earthdance, saturday september 17th.

as of right now, we have the algoma room and a sound
guy booked for friday august 5th. do we want to take
advantage of this and use it as our own BEAT THE HEAT™
fundraiser? Also as far as EarthDance goes, would that
be 1 or 2 weeks after our spoken word night at the New
Moon?

My name is Patty Brandl and I work at The Reporter in Fond du Lac (also a 2003 grad of the UW-Oshkosh journalism department).

I'm working on a story about what seems to be a growing, but for the most part, quiet part of the American public who might not support the continued military occupation in Iraq. I would love to talk to someone in your group, particularly if you have any members who live in our readership area. It includes Waupun, Van Dyne, Ripon, Eden and all of the Holyland in the Mt. Calvary area.

Even if you don't have anyone from our immediate area, I would still like to get some comments for my story from someone who could speak for your group. I have a Friday deadline so would need to talk to someone Wednesday afternoon or Thursday. I think it would be good exposure for your group and your position on the issues.

Subject: Iraq troop withdrawal referendum

Dear Anti-Warriors,

I'm starting to hear from people around the state who are interested in
placing a referendum on troop withdrawal from Iraq on their local
ballot in next April's spring election. As I've explained before, there
are basically two avenues available to us -- prevailing on county
boards to pass a resolution or petitioning in cities and villages. I'd
like to address some of the pros and cons of each approach.

County Board Resolution -- Your first step would be to find a
sympathetic county supervisor who would be willing to introduce your
resolution, which might read: "Be it resolved that the _____ County
Board of Supervisors hereby authorizes the placement on the April 4,
2006, ballot of the following advisory referendum: 'Should the United
States begin an immediate withdrawal of its troops from Iraq, beginning
with the National Guard and Reserves?'"

Chances are good you'll meet some opposition from members who don't
consider this a "county" issue, or who feel that, if they approve, they
are agreeing with the need for troop withdrawal. You will need to
clearly make your case that this referendum question does not in itself
promote troop withdrawal -- it only gives citizens the right to express
their opinions on the question. It is a means of stimulating discussion
about the war.

It may take multiple attempts to convince your county board to approve
this measure. It would be helpful to enlist the support of local clergy
and families with loved ones serving in Iraq. You could also consider a
petition drive as a way to impress upon your county board how much
support there is for the referendum. Also consider approaching possible
allies like progressive Democrats, Libertarians, etc.

I have not thoroughly researched the question of deadlines, but the
last date on which nomination papers can be submitted for persons
wishing to run for office in the spring is January 3, so I'm thinking
you should attempt to pass this resolution by the December meeting of
your county board at latest. One of the risks of this approach is that
your board could vote to approve the referendum at one meeting and then
reverse itself at the next.

Petitioning in Cities and Villages -- This method is only available to
residents of Wisconsin's incorporated cities and villages, which means
it leaves out most rural folks. It requires the collection of
signatures of eligible voters from within those city or village limits
equal in number to 15% of the number of people who voted in the last
(2002) gubernatorial election. To determine how many that is in your
locality, go to the following website and click on the link under Ward
By Ward Returns --> Governor and Lt. Governor. You'll need Acrobat
Reader since the records are in pdf format, but that can be downloaded
by clicking a link on the same page.

You'll have to add up the votes for each of the various candidates in
each of the wards in your city or village. I've done a few for folks
who've expressed interest:

>Oshkosh would need 2,830 signatures
>Racine would need 3,055 signatures
>LaCrosse would need 2,353 signatures

You must collect the signatures within a 60-day period on forms which
are prescribed by the State Elections Board. (I will be making a
template available soon.) These must be turned in to your village or
city clerk and received/acknowledged at a meeting of your city council
or village board at least six week prior to April 4. (If they're late,
the question will go on the fall ballot.) One of the benefits of this
method is that neither your mayor nor your city council or village
board has the power to reject your petitions -- they must place the
question on the ballot if you submit the required number of signatures.
(It's always a good idea to get an extra amount of signatures for
"insurance" purposes; a hostile mayor could act to strike some
signatures on technicalities.) I have not yet been able to determine
whether people circulating petitions must be residents of the city or
village in which they are collecting signatures, but I will get that
information out soon. (I'm guessing they do.)

There is nothing that I can see which would preclude local activists
from pursuing both of the above approaches simultaneously. In fact, it
may be a good idea to do so.

Remember that the wording for the referendum may be modified at the
discretion of local groups.

Proposed Endorsement

Hello Everyone,

After the meeting, I received a phone call asking for our endorsement of the Rally for Real Democracy. It is this Saturday and is in response to the Wisconsin Democratic Party Convention that is taking place here in Oshkosh. These are the main issue points the rally will focus on:

* Opposition to the horrific Gov. Doyle-sponsored Job Creation Acts that have dismantled air and water quality protections
* Opposition to the backroom deals of Gov Doyle’s administration on the minimum wage logrolling that took away local control
* Opposition to the bipartisan assaults on the UW system
* Opposition to the Democratic Philosophy of “Lesser Evilism” which consistently sells short the citizens of Wisconsin
* To demand progress on Guaranteed Health Care
* To demand serious Campaign Finance Reform, a promise that Gov Doyle made over 2 years ago
* To demand serious environmental quality protections
* To demand domestic partner benefits and for gender identity protection under our state’s existing nondiscrimination law

The purpose of the Justice Coalition is to bring together organizations and leaders in the Fox Valley who are working on a diverse array of justice issues to:
Increase networking and collaboration between justice organizations and
Provide "cross-education" about a variety of inter-related justice issues.
We include people working from a variety of justice perspectives such as social justice, environmental justice, economic justice, political justice, educational justice and religious justice. The Justice Coalition is non-partisan and welcomes differing persectives, ideas, beliefs and approaches among its members.

Military Recruitment

Hey everyone, the issue of military recruitment in highschool is a hot topic. Everyday at my school there is some division of the armed forces there trying to get us to recruit. Under the No Child Left Behind act schools are legeally forced to send our personal information to the armed service. The only way to stop this is to have your guardian sign a paper saying you dont want this information. Of course at my school we are never told about this. I found a form online located at http://www.militaryfreezone.org/opt_out.pdf and I ask everyone to tell every person in highschool about it and to fill it out.

Another suggestion was to change "Protect Human Rights for all" to either "Protect Human and Non-Human Rights for all" or the "Justice for all". Personally, I think the "non-human" distinction may be confusing and people may think something different. I don't have any alternative ideas at this point, but I will think on it. If any of you have any ideas of how we can make this more simple and precise, please comment.

Just Some Rules

Hey everyone. I am really happy to see that the blog is starting to take flight and excited to see what will come out of it. But as a reminder to us all including myself let's remember we are open to everyone's ideas. Also please no swearing at another blog member and remember personal problems should be dealt with in private not on the blog. Also please make all crtisicm constructive remember we are here to create positive change. If any member gets out of hand I will not hesitate to delete them from the blog. But all that crappy mumbo jumbo aside I'm sure no one will have to be banned from the blog and I am very anxious to see the outcome.

Fair Trade Day

Dr. Barnhill brought up having a Fair Trade Day about a week after Thanksgiving. This is meant to be an educational event as well as a fundraiser. I know we discussed having something similar to this at a previous meeting. What do you guys think? We could engage in their day or have our own event during the summer?
